About Schell's Brewing Co.

In 1860, German immigrant August Schell began to script the first chapter of a great American success story. It was this year that he established the August Schell Brewing Co. and laid the groundwork for a 150-year-old family tradition. Over a century and a half ago Schell's Brewery was already hard at work brewing superior lagers to meet the expectations of its thirsty German Community. This year Schell's is celebrating 150 Years. Featured beers include:

• Zommerfest - Introduced on Memorial Weekend, 1998, and only available in the summer, Zommerfest is brewed in a 'Kölsch' style, which originates from Cologne, Germany. Its characteristics are fairly light—in color and in flavor. It is a pale gold color, low in hop flavor and aroma, with a light body and a somewhat dry finish. This is a pleasant, light-flavored beverage that goes well with any summer activity.
• Firebrick - FireBrick was introduced in 1999, and is named after the bricks that line Schell's old boilers. It is the culmination of an effort to bridge the gap between the "popular-tasting" beers and the heartier, hand-crafted ones. FireBrick is a refreshing all-malt lager with an amber-red hue that reflects the feeling of the brewery itself. It has been described by Ted Marti as having a "subtle maltiness combined with a hint of hoppy taste that creates a mild, pleasantly drinkable beer." It is made with four specialty malts, along with Vanguard, Chinook and Hallertau hops.
• Grain Belt Nordeast - Grain Belt Nordeast is an American Amber lager and is the newest member to the Grain Belt Family. It has a light maltiness and hop aroma with a mild bitterness. Smooth taste with an excellent drinkability.

In hopes both events will take place outdoors on the grass, by the lake, we invite you to dress casually and comfortably. Picture picnic tables, a fantastic sunset over Big Detroit Lake, live rhythm and blues music, and add'l beer & drinks available from a tent outdoors. . . *If it rains, the beer tasting/ shrimp boil and live music events will be held indoors at The Lodge on Lake Detroit.
