Lodge Wins Hotel of the Year Award
Minnesota Lodging Association Honors The Lodge
The Lodge on Lake Detroit has been honored with the Small Property of the Year (100 rooms or fewer) Award from the The Minnesota Lodging Association.
The award was presented at the organization’s gala 2015 Awards Ceremony Dec. 10 at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest in Minnetonka.
In May of 2006, after 15 years of acquiring land, dreaming and planning, The Lodge on Lake Detroit in Detroit Lakes opened its doors. Owners Chris Holland-Mehlhaff and Scott Mehlhaff designed the property as a 54-room lifestyle hotel with unique in-room amenities, a green/eco-friendly emphasis, positive energy and wellness elements, a day spa and a place to expose guests to the arts.
The hotel is nestled along the lakeshore of Big Detroit Lake. Located where the nostalgic Castaway Motel and Resort once stood, each room faces the lake, treating guests to dramatic sunsets.
The Lodge features glass enclosed showers, suites with kitchens, spa suites, an indoor pool, a lobby bistro and bar, two meeting rooms, a sandy beach, boat slips and fire pits, as well as a spa with massages, facials and nail services.
The owners, both accomplished musicians and passionate supporters of the arts, commissioned regional artists to make unique furniture and art for guest rooms and common areas.
A grand piano in the lobby is frequently in use by regional musicians for performances of jazz, classical, R&B, rock and opera.
An emphasis on the environment is felt throughout the facility. The hotel is currently recognized by TripAdvisor as a silver level GreenLeader hotel.
To help ensure the lasting beauty of The Lodge’s lakeside location, Scott and Chris have worked for years to restore and preserve the shoreline. Guests see environmental efforts reflected in room soaps with biodegradable packaging, use of organic foods and wines, a rain garden and other aspects.
The Lodge’s sustainable/eco-friendly efforts have received recognition, including Explore Minnesota Tourism’s 2010 Sustainable Tourism Award, and recognition by Best Western International as a Green Hotel at Earth Day Rally 2012 in Washington, D.C.
The Lodge was recently recognized by Best Western International with the prestigious M.K. Guertin Award for the third consecutive year. The award recognizes hotels in North America with top guest service and satisfaction scores.
