Six Generations of Chmielewski Family Polka Music

For over 100 years and through 6 generations, the Chmielewski family has been synonymous with polka music. Florian Chmielewski became the leader of the band in 1945 when he received his 1st accordion at age 18.

Born in Sturgeon Lake, MN on February 10, 1927, with 14 siblings, Florian went from a dairy farmer, to a County Commissioner, to a MN State Senator, never once, giving up his love for the accordion.  He began weekly radio shows performing with his 4 brothers, before the broadcasting of the Chmielewski Funtime TV show for the next 35 years, seen Nationwide.

Florian’s children (Florian Jr, Jeff, Mark and Patty) later joined the band and continued the family heritage into 4 generations.  The band produced over 40 Albums/CD’s and Florian started the Chmielewski Int’l Polkafest, now in its 38th year and Funtime Tours.  After receiving 9 Minnie Grammies from the MN Music Academy, Florian was inducted in the MN Music Hall of Fame in New Ulm, and the Ironworld USA Hall of Fame in Chisholm, along with his daughter Patty.  Most recently, Florian received an Honorary Doctorate of Law and Music Degree for his 26 years in the MN State Senate and his dedication to polka music.

For 70 years, and his never-ending love and devotion to polka music, it is with great honor that Florian Chmielewski receive the Pioneer Award and induction into the Polka Music Hall of Fame.
