Sustainable, Green Lodging Focus

Best Western Premier The Lodge on Lake Detroit is located on the shore of a beautiful Minnesota lake. The success of The Lodge depends on the combination of a quality Minnesota lake resort experience, that includes in no small part, the beauty of the lake and its surrounding environment.

To help ensure the lasting beauty of the Lodge’s lakeside location, owners, Scott and Chris Mehlhaff have been actively engaged in restoring and preserving the shoreline of the lake for years.

They also engage in operating as eco-friendly a hotel and resort as possible, so that their guests may enjoy their Minnesota vacation with the knowledge that their luxury stay is having a minimal environmental impact.

Lakeshore Restoration & Rain Garden Lodge Projects

Because of our proximity to Big Detroit Lake, we were concerned about protecting our lake from run off. A typical treatment for run off is a settling pond, a treatment that would have involved creating large, unattractive, deep holes surrounded by rocks on our property to hold water. We decided to explore a rain garden alternative. Since that was a newer idea to our area, we had to consult with a Minneapolis engineer who had the expertise in this regard. The Lodge project ended up being one of the biggest commercial plantings of its kind in the state that year, using approximately 4,000 indigenous perennials.
